BASIC LIFE SUPPORT and AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATION FOR ADULTS, CHILDREN and INFANTS
The qualification is primarily for learners who have a responsibility at work or are involved in voluntary and community activities having access to an automated external defibrillator (AED) but teaches valuable skills that will benefit everyone.

COURSE OVERVIEW
A learner will gain the knowledge and practical competence required to be able to recognise and treat adults, children and infants who have suffered cardiac arrest and to respond quickly, calmly, and confidently.

The qualification consists of one unit which learners must successfully complete to achieve the qualification. The qualification is assessed through practical demonstration. There is no grading of the assessment, learners pass or are referred.
ASSESSMENTS and
CERTIFICATION
Scenarios are set recreating a real-life situation as far as possible to enable a learner to demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills. During the practical assessment the learner will be asked set related oral questions by the trainer/assessor.

The practical assessment is ongoing throughout the course with the trainer/assessor making learners aware of when they are being assessed and what they are required to demonstrate. A learner must satisfactorily complete each scenario to pass the practical assessment.
Upon successful completion, the qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. To maintain certification, learners must complete the full course again after this period. Annual refresher training is strongly recommended to keep skills up to date.
